To my mother-in-law
No one will ever see this, but I really need to vent:
To help maintain family harmony I do not discuss politics with my mother-in-law, but I would like to reply to a few of her discussion points here:
1) I don't know how "Bush sleeps at night", I imagine, with the responsibility that he has to shoulder, it may be quite difficult at times. I do know that I disagree with the underlying premise behind your question; that the president has done something that he should be ashamed of. It's true that American service members are dying overseas, and that is a tragedy. However, we are at war, one which we did not choose, but one that must be fought; not just to prevent further assaults such as the 9/11 attacks, but to preserve our freedoms. After all (and this is something that many on the left seem oblivious to) what do you think will happen to our civil liberties if a nuclear device is detonated in the United States?
2) I know that Iraq did not attack us; Italy did not bomb Pearl Harbor either; yet somehow we ended up invading Sicily and occupying Rome as part of the overall strategy to defeat fascism in WW II. As a corollary I would also like to point out that we are not at war with Al Qaeda any more than we were at war with the Imperial Japanese Navy, the SS, or the Gestapo. The idea that capturing Bin Laden and/or destroying Al Qaeda is sufficient to end the threat that we currently face is as incorrect as the belief that we could declare war against the Japanese because they had attacked us and not have to deal with the fascists in Europe. Al Qaeda is only one arm of a large, well-funded, and determined movement. A movement that is inimical to freedom and quite willing to use any means (including killing millions of innocents) if that is what it takes to reach their goal - world wide dominance of a form of Islam where women are chattel and the Sharia is the law.
